Designing With Natural Light: The Architect's First Material

Light is the cheapest, most generous material we work with, and the hardest to master. Before texture or colour, it is daylight that decides how a room feels from hour to hour.
Light shapes the room before any material does
Long before a wall is painted or a floor is laid, the quality of a space is set by how daylight enters it. A north-facing room asks for a different palette than one flooded with afternoon sun, and the architecture that ignores this works against itself. We treat light as the first material because it is the one the client lives with every day.
Orientation is a design decision
Where a building faces is not a constraint to accept but a tool to use. Placing the kitchen to catch the morning, holding bedrooms back from the harsh western glare, opening a stair to a shaft of overhead light — these are quiet moves that change how the whole house is inhabited.
Shadow is part of the composition
A space lit evenly from every side reads as flat. It is the interplay of bright and dim, the soft gradient across a plaster wall, the sharp edge of a window's frame on the floor that gives a room depth and a sense of time passing within it.
